dedicated to my Uncle Bernard, who was truly one of my heroes. Uncle Bernard
passed away on June 29, 2005. Though my father passed away almost 25 years
ago, my Uncle Bernard was a piece of my dad that my brother and I deeply
cherished. He was always kind, always loving and one of the most humble
people I have ever known. Though extremely intelligent and well educated, he
had the ability to make anyone he came in contact with feel at ease. Whether
the janitor or one of his fellow physicians - he treated each person with
dignity. The love and care that he showed his family was beyond remarkable.
He suffered an aneurysm in his early 40's that almost killed him. It left
him a quadriplegic. His children were all young at the time of his illness.
He could have bowed down to his disability - just collected a disability
check and stayed home. He could have...but he didn't. He chose instead to go
back to work as a radiologist. For 32 years, my Aunt Barbara daily drove him
back and forth to work until he retired. Their story is one of deep love,
commitment and the will to go on in spite of the circumstances. My
admiration for both of them is beyond words.
My brother and I feel as though we lost our dad again. We loved our Uncle so much. Though we didn't see him as often as we would have liked to, our bond was deep. I always loved getting his emails. He always had words of kindness and encouragement for me. He believed in me. He was proud of any accomplishment I made...and he let me know it. He was a shining example of what a husband, a father and a man should be. We love you Uncle Bernard...and we miss you so much. |
